1.)  When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

I started in July, 2014.

2.)  What is your favorite class to teach?

That’s a tough one! I love a lot of the classes that we offer. I think if I have to narrow it down though, I love teaching the class “Learn to Navigate Windows 10,” because it’s a great introduction for our guests, and helps to simplify something that may have been intimidating before attending. Usually it’s the big hook that gets people coming back for more, because they realize that it’s easier than they expected, and they realize that there’s more they might be interested in!

3.)  What type of computer do you have?

That depends, which one? 🙂

  • My desktop is a Frankenstein that I built myself for 3d Modeling, Illustration, and video games
  • I have a Surface Pro 3 that I use for work, sketching, and some play
  • I also have an Acer laptop that I use for Adobe Creative Suite and gaming while traveling

4.)  What is your favorite itinerary?

Honestly, I think I’d have to say Alaska. Beautiful scenery, delicious seafood. The only downside is that I always spend too much.

5.)  What is your favorite ship?

I don’t really think that I have one. Usually it’s the crew that makes the best contracts.

6.)  What is your favorite cuisine?

Tough call there. I’ll eat just about anything that isn’t spicy.

8.)  Where in the world do you want to travel to next?

I’d like to travel to Japan sometime. If I ever go though, I really want to finish up learning Japanese.

I have a BFA in Illustration.

1.)  When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

January, 2009, when the program first officially launched.  I was the first Techspert to set sail after we had our initial training conference.  Also the last original Techspert still standing!!

2.) What is your favorite class to teach?

I really love teaching any of the photo related classes. I have a BFA in Photography.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

I personally use an ASUS computer.

4.) What is your favorite itinerary?

My favorite itinerary is the Mediterranean cruises with overnights in Venice, Istanbul and Barcelona.

5.) What is your favorite ship?

I enjoy different things about all our different ships, but I think my top two so far would be the Eurodam and Prinsendam.

6.) What is your favorite cuisine?

I love Indian food….curry especially.

7.) In which state or country were you born?

I was born in Minnesota, or as I prefer to call it…Minne(SNOWta)!

8.) Where in the world do you want to travel to next?

I would enjoy sailing through Asia and India, I’ve never been to either area.

9.) What is the most interesting fact about yourself?

Years ago I trained as a mime, because for a long time I had terrible stage fright if I had to memorize a script, but I have always loved being on stage with an audience.

I have a very intimate relationship with an ASUS Zenbook.  It’s my baby.

Before this job, I owned a restaurant for 17 years.  To have escaped from that to this amazing job is something of a minor miracle.

Get Creative with Photo Gallery and Learn How to Use Your Digital Camera are my favorites.  They are top favorites of our guests as well.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

I have a HP laptop and a Vaio desktop at home.

4.) What is your favorite itinerary?

Currently, I’ve only ever done Alaska out of Vancouver and have enjoyed it so much. However, I’ve got a feeling that every itinerary will bring something special for the books!

5.) What is your favorite ship?

I’ve only sailed on the Volendam and as my first ship it will hold a special place in my heart.  However, I’ve heard that every ship is special in its own way.

6.) What is your favorite cuisine?

Can I just say all food? I love to eat!

7.) In which state or country were you born?

I was born in Mexico! However, I’ve spent half of my life living in Texas, but have also lived in Germany and Brazil.  I like to call myself a citizen of the world.

8.) Where in the world do you want to travel to next?

Either the Baltic or the Mediterranean for sure!

9.) What is the most interesting fact about yourself?

Former polo player and I am able to speak Spanish, English, German, Portuguese and understand basic French, Norwegian and Italian.  What can I say? I love learning languages!

I started in the Digital Workshop May 2012 on the MS Zaandam.

2.) What is your favorite class to teach?

My favorite class to teach is Organize Photo with Windows 10. Here we introduce different organization techniques beyond creating folders.  Such as facial recognition or descriptive tags to retrieve a photo in one’s ever-growing photo library.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

I currently have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (cat-call whistle sound).

4.) What is your favorite itinerary?

Without a doubt, nothing beats the Alaska itinerary. Mountains, wildlife, and fresh brewed Alaskan Beer!

5.) What is your favorite ship?

I absolutely love the Westerdam, but recently helped launch the Koningsdam which has dynamic new music venues and restaurants.

6.) What is your favorite cuisine?

Any type of sushi, pizza or sandwich.  Investor ideas…..a sushi-pizza sandwich.

The Rockin’ city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Or as Alice Cooper explains, “Its pronounced “Mill-e-wah-que”, which is Algonquin for “The Good Land”.

I want to ride my motorcycle cross country throughout every state in the continental USA.

9.) What is the most interesting fact about yourself?

I am actually an alien cyborg from the planet Xenon, sent to Earth on behalf of the Intergalactic-Alliance to save the galaxy’s sudden decline in honey-bees.

So far I would say it is the 2 – week Alaska cruise out of Seattle.  I have a feeling after doing the Mediterranean itinerary though it will be my favorite.

Besides being interested in computers and photography, I love music and enjoy playing the piano when I am on vacation.

Difficult to narrow it down to just one, but I do love teaching the Movie Maker class.  Despite being an older program, it’s intuitive and guests are astonished that we are able to create a professional-looking video in a very short time.

The Mediterranean because of the climate and the variety of ports.

The smaller ships because they have the largest Digital Workshops and the best views!!

Thai and Vietnamese, but let’s not forget Italian.  Pasta never gets boring!

After Reading a number of books on Iceland and Greenland, Holland America’s Viking Cruise is at the top of the list.

9.) What is the most interesting fact about yourself?

Before starting this job, I had worked nearly ten years in public libraries.

1.) When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

I started working in the Digital Workshop in the summer of 2016, but wasn’t completely new to HAL as I worked as a Youth Staff in the onboard kids club during my studies five years ago.

2.) What is your favorite class to teach?

I really enjoy teaching the Organize and Collaborate with OneNote class, as this is a very hands-on class and a lot of people are pleasantly surprised by all the cool things that they can do with OneNote.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

I am using a Sony Vaio now and cannot imagine ever going back to a computer that doesn’t have a touch screen. ☺

4.) What is your favorite itinerary?

Any itinerary that I haven’t done before would be my favorite itinerary.  Being Dutch, I try to get away from the rain as much as I can , so anywhere the sun shines would be perfect for me as well.

5.) What is your favorite ship?

I have sailed on seven HAL ships and must say that the Digital Workshop on the Maasdam is one of the best looking I have seen so far, so I would have to go for that one.

6.) What is your favorite cuisine?

I recently backpacked through South East Asia and my taste buds absolutely loved it. I finally understand why people rave about the Thai cuisine, as you can find the most delicious authentic dishes on every street corner.

7.) In which state or country were you born?

I was born in Haarlem, a small city close to Amsterdam, the Netherlands.  I grew up in an even smaller town called Santpoort-Noord.

8.) Where in the world do you want to travel to next?

My bucket list is long, very long. I have been fortunate enough to have met so many great people from all over the world who shared stories about their homelands with me and I would love to be able to visit every single country. However, if I would have to pick one destination I would go trekking in Nicaragua.

9.) What is the most interesting fact about yourself?

I have studies and worked in eight different countries. I believe that raisins are the best thing on the planet and secretly dream about becoming a DJ one day.

Rob Nicholson

1.) When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

2.) What is your favorite class to teach?

Learn to Use Your Digital Camera as I’ve worked in photography and still love it. However, Learn to Navigate Windows  has always been one of my favorites as it helps make things just click into place.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

It’s a bit of a mongrel, it’s just made up of random parts…..although I do use a Surface Pro 3 for travel and work.

4.) What is your favorite itinerary?

I seriously can enjoy any itinerary, as much as I LOVED seeing Antarctica, I could quite happily spend any amount of time in the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

5.)  What is your favorite ship?

MS Eurodam

6.)  What is your favorite cuisine?

Being English, I have to go for our national…Indian food.

Honestly, everywhere. However, if it comes down to it Namibia or Tanzania.

My favorite classes to teach are the photo editing and digital camera classes.

My favorite itinerary so far is the Panama Canal Crossing

Favorite ship is the Westerdam (because that is the only one I have been on)

I love teaching Learn to Use Your Digital Camera because it can have such a positive change for the guests on vacation.  I always say to my guests you might as well get the best pictures while you are having these once in lifetime experiences!

4.)  What is your favorite itinerary?

This is a hard question and I don’t have just one so I’ll narrow it down to my top three.  The Mediterranean, the Baltic and down under in Australia/New Zealand.

The Oosterdam and the Eurodam are my two favorite ships that I have been on as of now.

6.) What is your cuisine?

I love shellfish with a passion, but as a New Yorker a good slice of pizza gets me every time.

1.)  When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

I started the position as a Digital Workshop Host in April 2016, but I have been on ships since 2007.

2.)  What is your favorite class to teach?

Safe and sound – mostly because it’s so engaging. I like to get guests to talk about their own real world experiences and often those stories and questions help others who have experienced similar events.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

     Lenovo idea pad running Windows 10

 4.)  What is your favorite itinerary? 

The Baltic cruises are always fascinating. But my heart belongs to the Canada/New England cruises.  It’s simply mesmerizing to witness Bar Harbor, Maine in the fall.

5.) What is your favorite ship? 

The Statendam. Although she was older, smaller and is currently no longer part of the Holland America fleet, she had a personality unlike any other ship. Definitely one of my favorite contracts.

6.) What is your cuisine?

Pasta. Especially from the make your own pasta on the Lido. So many creative dishes have sprung from that little gem.

I would still like to do the South America/ Antarctica run.

9.) What is the most interesting thing about yourself?

I studied graphic design, play guitar and have a passion for drawing works that are near life size or actual. So much so that It takes up most of my spare time actually.

1.)  When did you start working in the Digital Workshop?

I started working in the Digital Workshop on  July 29th, 2009

2.)  What is your favorite class to teach?

My favorite classes to teach are always the new operating system classes such as Learn to Navigate Windows 10.  They give are guests a great foundation in the OS and generate a sense of confidence in themselves.

3.) What type of computer do you have?

I have an ASUS laptop.

4.)  What is your favorite itinerary?

I have done almost every single itinerary and my favorite is the Grand World Voyage…..for obvious reasons ☺

5.) What is your favorite ship? 

My favorite ships is our elegant explorer, the MS Prinsendam.

6.) What is your cuisine?

I love southeast Asian cuisines, especially Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese.  How they layer flavors and their use of fresh herbs is amazing. I usually gain about 10 pounds if I do the Asian itinerary.

7.) In which state or country were you born?

Born and bred Texan!

8.) Where in the world do you want to travel to next?

For my next adventure I would like to visit East Africa.  Namely, Eastern South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya…too much?

9.) What is the most interesting thing about yourself?

One of my main goals in life was to explore 100 countries before I turned 30.  I’ve hit and exceeding that target with currently 116 countries pinned thus far.
